5 Days of GIVEAWAY:: DAY 5 - and all about B&J Fabrics.

10/03/2014 12:25:00 AM

As you all know..... In celebration of reaching 5000 followers on Facebook, 1,000,000 page views on my blog, and 1200+ members in the Emmaline Sewing Patterns Group this month, I am holding

5 DAYS OF GIVEAWAY
and this is the LAST DAY!!

Thank you all for participating all week long. It's been a lot of fun reading all of your comments and I can't wait to give 5 of you prizes on Saturday. I wish I could give one to all of you. I hope you will follow along in the future, as I do try to do giveaways often.

Gorgeous window display at the second floor entry.
I have a few more pictures of my trip to New York to share with you. I know how much you all like fabric so I wanted to show you B&J Fabrics.  It's right on Fashion Ave and like most of the fabric shops there, you wouldn't even know it was there unless someone told you. A very small sign in a second story window is the only thing that will tell you. Advice: When you go to the garment district in Manhattan, make a list of all the button, zipper, trim, thread, and fabric places you want to go because you WILL pass them and not know until later. I did find that out - later.

Notable points about B&J Fabrics:  You can shop on their website, and they boast the largest selection of Liberty of London. You get a free bag when you shop there (I like bags). All the fabrics are on rolls, not bolts, and you do not pull out the rolls and take them to the cutting table. It was a bit confusing at first, but then... "oooh wooooow"... we all figured it out. All of the fabrics from the rolls have an end cut hanging on a hanger with a number on it. All of the hangers are in the sections of their substrates. So you just go through the hangers like clothes in a closet and pull out the ones you want and take them to an available cutting table. Students get swatches cut from these. The cutter person guy, a.k.a. Staff, looks at the roll number on the hanger and runs off and collects them. I found that it took a while for the staff to search through the rolls and find the right ones, but I think it might be a space saving thing because they really have a lot of fabric in there.

Fabric hanging on hangers. Can you spot Waldo, I mean me? I always have sunglasses on my head.
I had never touched Liberty of London Tana lawn fabric before, until that day, and I really didn't know what the fuss was all about. Umm... now I do. It's so, so soft and the print is so very fine and delicate. I ended up with only two... but now that I know where to buy it, I might end up with more. I think these will be linings in some very special bags I want to make for ME, ME, ME! They are way nicer in person, trust me. I went with the blue peacock feathers in mind, but came out with these two:

Pretty!
This is me getting my liberty cut.

Happy Canadian sporting a "Butterfly Sling Purse" getting  Liberty of London
This is my cutter person guy. He was a good sport. Actually, Sheila was having such a hard time taking the picture. She was quite far away and I kept staying "hurry up!" and I put my bunny ears up and she said it looked like I was giving him the finger so she wanted to take another. He knew what I was doing, so I just said "I am going to put bunny ears behind your head and you just look down and pretend you don't know, okay?" He thought I was odd, I could tell. He was right. Look at my sunburn from sitting on the double-decker bus the previous day.

Say cheese! Nice sunburn.
These are some pictures I took of Manhattan while getting said sunburn on the double-decker bus. I will just go through them very quickly... This tour was a highlight of the trip for me.  I can't wait to go back some day. CLICK THESE TO ENLARGE!!

  3. I would like to go to Washington DC for about 3 weeks, in either the Spring with the cherry blossoms, or the Fall with the changing colors. I would need about a week or so just at the Smithsonian because my husband likes to read every word of every display! Even so, I would love to go there.

  11. Man Oh MAN what a great prize! So excited for the chance to win! My favorite vacation destination was when I went to Phucket, Thailand back in 2001. If you ever get the opportunity, I HIGHLY recommend it. For a week, I lived in a small hut, sans a/c, and gorged myself on some of the best seafood I've ever tasted (and I'm from the Gulf Coast)! The water is crystal clear and you can see 30 feet or more into the water. It truly is amazing. trinity/ramsaygrace

  54. I would love to follow in your footsteps and visit Manhattan. I have a young cousin and her daughter living here who both have earlier versions of tote bags that I had made a couple of years ago--before I discovered emmalinebags.com's bling and patterns. Since then the 8yr old actually "hand" made a little tote bag herself to try to mimic the one I sent her. Her mother had won one I donated to a our parents' family reunion door prizes. I'd love to have them join me on the 'fabric trek' to see all the wonders available in their home town of Manhattan. Once I get a new knee, I'd love to take my daughter and granddaughter on that trip to visit our US family.
